Getting Ready for a New Baby

Getting Ready for a New Baby
Posted on 06/23/2015

Getting ready for a new baby is an exciting time.  Prenatal appointments, preparation for labor, delivery, and baby’s first days, and organizing supplies are all priorities.  Are you reading books about babies in anticipation?  Are you researching topics related to babies on the internet?  Have you heard about the benefits of infant massage?  Have you had a HUG (Helping Us Grow) prenatal or postpartum home visit?  Have you researched or registered for an ECFE (Early Childhood Family Education) class with your new baby?

The most important things you can do with your new baby are feed, cuddle, talk, read, and sing to him.  Your baby is learning about his world through these experiences.  (There is no way to spoil a baby.)  Your baby is forming an attachment to you and is learning to trust.  As you feed your baby, you have an opportunity to make eye contact for increasingly longer periods of time while baby is awake.  You are teaching whole body listening and laying the foundation for future cooperation.   As you talk, sing, and read to him, you are making a statement that he is significant.  He is learning language.  Listening to your baby’s cues will allow you to meet his needs.  Cherish this time - it goes quickly!
