Zoom Basics
Zoom is available with any computer, phone or tablet that has a webcam, speakers and a microphone. You can access Zoom without one or more of these but will not be able to use that particular feature. It is also important to have a reliable internet connection or phone service as well. If you are new to Zoom, it is a good idea to test the program before the scheduled meeting/class to avoid potential roadblocks and avoid missing your event.
On a computer:
-
Go to www.zoom.us. In the upper right corner, there is a drop down menu called Resources. Hover your mouse and then click on Download Zoom Client. Click on the Download blue rectangle, you will need to then click the Zoom box that appears in your bottom left hand corner. When the page pops up, you may want to sign up for a free account.
On a phone or tablet:
- Go to your App Store and use the search box to find Zoom. Click on the Get button. When the app opens, you may want to create a free account.
Feel free to play around with Zoom ahead of time, it will help you to become acquainted with the program.
To Access a class/meeting/event:
For easy access, click on the link that has been shared with you. When the dialog box opens, click on Open Zoom Meeting. If this isn’t working, you can also try entering the Meeting ID and password on the website or your app in the Join a Meeting section.
Quick tips (most need to have you hover your mouse for the to pop up):
Sound - The microphone button can be found in the bottom left hand corner. Microphones are very sensitive and often pick up miscellaneous sounds. It’s best practice to keep yourself on mute until you are ready to talk. Sometimes the organizer puts all participants on mute to begin.
Video - The video button is also in the left hand corner. You do not have to enable your video if you prefer to participate without being visible to the group. You will still be able to see the instructor.
Chat - At the bottom of the screen in the middle you will find a Chat. If you click on the icon, the chat will open on the right side and you can type in messages at the bottom and hit return to post it.
Reactions - Click on the reactions button on the bottom to get a variety of options. These are a great way to express you opinion without interrupting.
View - This is located on the top right side and will give you the option of seeing just the speaker or the speaker and the participants (Gallery View).
End - This is on the bottom right of your screen and if clicked, gives the option to End for All or Leave Meeting. If you did not organize this meeting, just click Leave Meeting.
